Schmelly’s Dirt Farm Wins 2019 Startup St. Bernard Business Competition

Schmelly’s Dirt Farm took home the grand prize at the 5th annual Startup St. Bernard presented by the Meraux Foundation and St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation. The composting business was selected by a panel of judges out of a pool of three finalists who pitched their businesses in front of an audience of over a hundred on Friday at Docville Farm. Schmelly’s was awarded $40,000 in cash and over $43,000 in in-kind services to help them scale their business, which will expand into St. Bernard Parish. The other two finalists, Breathing Waters and DaParish Kayaks received $5,000 each.

Startup St. Bernard organizers, The Meraux Foundation and St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation have announced the three finalists selected to compete for nearly $90,000 in prizes in the yearly competition: Breathing Waters, Da Parish Kayaks, and Schmelly’s. The 5thAnnual Startup St. Bernard competition is being held in conjunction with New Orleans Entrepreneur Week on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Film St. Bernard Offers Additional Tax Incentives to Spur Local Economy

St. Bernard Parish Government, in partnership with the St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation (SBEDF), is sweetening the pot for motion-picture film, digital, and television productions with the announcement of a new tax incentive program, “Film St. Bernard.” The program was created to encourage growth and investment in St. Bernard Parish by offering a rebate for lodging, payroll expenses, and other production expenditures made within the parish.
